Hosted by Melinda Jennis, Founder of Pathways for Exceptional Children and a parent of a young adult with disabilities
When a child is diagnosed with special needs, the conversation suddenly focuses on our child's disability. Many conversations with doctors, teachers and the myriad of professionals in our children's lives focuses on what they can't do.
We have to adjust our expectations and dreams--for our children and for ourselves. We have to deal with the day-to-day stress of raising our child, and underneath it all, we have the realization that this responsibility will be on-going.
The stress of this psychological burden has a real impact on our long-term physical and emotional health.
Yes, raising a child with special needs is a different path.
In this webinar, we are going to learn the 5 steps we need to help our children achieve their greatest potential.
As we help our children achieve their fullest potential, we also give ourselves the gift of greater independence, fulfillment, and freedom in our own lives.
There is so much more to our children's success than the IEP and adult service plans. Yes, our children need these things, but as their parents, we can control, teach and empower our children and ourselves to achieve much more than an IEP could ever envision. Our children may be on a different path than other children, but with the right approach, we can help our children achieve their greatest potential.
Rather than looking at our children's inabilities, we can focus on their abilities. By concentrating on what they can do and helping them take small, daily steps towards ability goals, our children can realized increased independence. We can empower our children and ourselves to live beyond limitations.
Our children are on a different path, but they can still progress down their own path. This progress may be at a different pace than we are used to. The goals may be smaller. But with each small step towards the next goal, however small, our children will have increased independence and confidence, which means greater freedom for our children and ourselves.
"For our children to dream, they must see us dream. We cannot lead our children where we have not been. Pursuing our dreams is not selfish. It is essential to mental health, happiness, and good parenting."
Our lives can feel like we're living in a constant state of reaction--jumping from one crisis and obligation to the next appointment. We lose a sense of control.
In the 5 Steps to Independence, Freedom and Fulfillment, you will learn:
As our children achieve their potential, we all can achieve our desired outcome: greater independence, freedom and fulfillment.
None of this is magic. It will require work. It will require time. But achieving greater freedom and fulfillment in our lives is possible.
